Chairlift

One of the most notable things that one can see while on a ski trip are the chairlifts that are sure to be visible even upon arrival at any ski resort. These are the chairs that may be seen suspended by wires that go up and down a slope, often carrying a number of people. There are varying sizes of lifts with different maximum load allowed. These features of these lifts will be further discussed, as well as other details in the following paragraphs.

Structure and use of chairlifts

There are some people who may confuse these lifts with some other chair hydraulics or motorized lifts. This type of lift may be seen as a type of aerial lift that is made up of a circulating steel cable that is strung between two terminals. In most cases, these lifts have a series of chairs, whereas there are some that use just one or two. The said lifts are often the primary mode of transport at ski areas, and thus, it has sometimes been referred to as skilifts. However, since these chairlifts can also be found in certain amusement parks, it may be safe to say that the proper term for these lifts on ski areas is still not "skilifts".

Each of the chairs of these lifts vary from one place to the other. While modern versions of these lifts can carry up to four people at a time, this is not really recommended as it can sometimes test the capacity of the cables, plus, the speed of the travel slows down as the weight increases.

When these lifts first came out, the capacity was just two people per lift chair. With that capacity, the lift could shuttle 1200 people an hour. If that were compared to recent developments of the lifts, the lifts these days can move approximately 4000 people every hour, of course if it was running at the fastest speed it could achieve.

Future of chairlifts

The use of chairlifts started around the 1990s. However, it can be seen that as a move to keep up with the times, better versions have come out of the woodwork, and now there are major ski areas that make use of detachable versions of these lifts. It can be said that although there are better technologies where these lifts are concerned, there are still a number of people who prefer to use the older and more trusted versions. This is because, apart from its trustworthiness, the detachable versions of some of these lifts and vertical lifts are still costly and need high maintenance.
